Synopsis

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is a sparkling comedy of manners that explores class, identity, and social ambition in Edwardian England.

When Eliza Doolittle, a spirited Cockney flower seller, crosses paths with the brilliant but arrogant Professor Henry Higgins, her life is changed forever. Higgins boasts that, through speech and etiquette alone, he can transform Eliza into a lady fit for high society. What begins as a simple wager soon becomes a fascinating journey of self-discovery, challenging assumptions about class, status, and what truly defines a person.

Filled with wit, charm, and unforgettable characters, Pygmalion remains one of Shaw’s most celebrated works. Its sharp social commentary and enduring themes continue to resonate with modern audiences, while its influence lives on through the beloved musical adaptation My Fair Lady.

Directed by Paul Baston

Character List

  • HENRY HIGGINS – Male – 30+ – Well spoken, pompous
  • COLONEL PICKERING – Male – 30+ Well spoken, kindly character
  • ELIZA DOOLITTLE – Female – 18 – 25ish – must be convincing as a cockney flower seller, but later as a refined, well spoken lady
  • ALFRED DOOLITTLE – Male – Eliza’s father hence 40+ – a cockney dustbin man
  • MRS PEARCE – Female – Higgins’s housekeeper – 30+ – no specific accent (a Scottish lilt would be nice)
  • MRS HIGGINS – Female – Higgins’ mother so ideally 60+ but this can be achieved via wigs/make-up if necessary – well spoken
  • MRS EYNSFORD-HILL – Female – Has two adult offspring so ideally 50+ – fairly well spoken but not as posh as others
  • CLARA EYNSFORD-HILL – Female – Daughter of Mrs Eynsford-Hill so 18-30 – fairly well spoken
  • FREDDIE EYNSFORD-HILL – Male – Son of Mrs Eynsford-Hill so 18-30 – fairly well spoken – bit of a twit!
  • PARLOUR MAID – Female – 18+
  • 2* BYSTANDERS – Gender non-specific – Age non-specific – small roles that are only used briefly in Act 1 Scene 1 so could easily double up as e.g. Alfred Doolittle, Mrs Higgins  and/or Parlour Maid
