Synopsis
The 39 Steps is a Hitchcock thriller seen through a Monty Python-style lens, a ripping yarn of thrills, intrigue and unexpected romance.
Pulled into a web of intrigue and deceit, Richard Hannay must evade shadowy organisations, femmes fatales, corrupt constables and frisky farmers’ wives. Twisted into knots by skulduggery and suspicion, Hannay must solve the mystery of the 39 steps and save the homeland before it’s too late.
Strap yourself in for this parody as four actors perform 139 roles in 100 minutes at breakneck speed. It’s Hitchcock made hilarious!
ROLES
Male lead: Richard Hannay
Our dashing hero; well-educated and physically active. Needs a good level of physical fitness as he is on stage for most of the play, and must be able to maintain a “stiff upper lip” type English accent.
Female lead: Anabella Schmidt/Margaret/Pamela
The actor portrays the three very different women who capture Hannay’s heart at different stages of the play.
Anabella Schmidt:
A femme fatale and woman of mystery. German/Russian accent
Margaret:
The young and innocent wife of a Scottish crofter. Glasgow accent
Pamela:
A feisty and independent woman of the mid 1930’s. Well-bred English accent.
Clown 1 and 2:
The actors portray all the characters not played by the male and female leads; a variety of characters both male and female throughout the play, sometimes changing characters within a scene. Can be of any age and gender, but must have a reasonable level of fitness, comedic timing, and a love for silly accents – including English, Scottish, Cockney and German.

Rehearsals and Technical rehearsal
The expectation is that the technical team will attend as many rehearsals as possible, there are no plans to hold a traditional technical rehearsal.
As the play relies on rapid changes of scene and costumes for much of its impact the aim is to have as much tech, costume etc running as early as possible and making ongoing improvements, and to run fully from the beginning of the fourth week before opening.
Requests from technicians for stops and repeats during rehearsals will be fully supported.
