Synopsis

Winner of multiple awards, including the Molière Award for Best Play, The Father is a modern classic that explores the heartbreaking and disorienting world of old age through the eyes of André, a proud man whose grasp on reality begins to slip away. Zeller’s masterful writing, combined with a clever and unsettling staging structure, invites the audience to experience confusion, tenderness, laughter and loss in equal measure — a journey that is at once gripping and profoundly human.

Tom Irvine brings fresh vision, ideas and sensitivity to this production utilising the tech skills of the Theatre production team guiding the audience through a story that is both intimate and universal. Audiences can expect an evening of thought-provoking theatre that lingers long after the final curtain.

Don’t miss this summer production a gripping exploration of memory, identity, and love.

André

Seeking a male actor (60+) for a complex, emotionally demanding role. The character is an affable older man whose charm slowly gives way to confusion, volatility, and cruelty as he grapples with memory loss and a deteriorating grip on reality. Requires strong dramatic range and stamina for dialogue-heavy scenes.

Anne

Seeking a female actor, 40+, to portray a woman caught between deep love for her ageing father and the growing strain of his confusion, demands, and unpredictable behaviour. She is compassionate and resilient, yet increasingly torn as she tries to maintain her own life while caring for him. The role requires emotional nuance, vulnerability, and strong dialogue delivery, as she navigates guilt, frustration, tenderness, and the painful erosion of the man she once knew.

Pierre

Seeking a male actor, 40+, to portray Anne’s husband a man who begins as patient and supportive but gradually grows resentful and exhausted as André’s worsening condition consumes their home and marriage. He loves Anne deeply, yet feels increasingly sidelined and overwhelmed by the constant demands, tension, and emotional weight of caring for her father. The role requires subtle emotional layering, controlled frustration, and strong dialogue work as he navigates loyalty, fatigue, and the quiet unraveling of his own limits.

Laura (Carer)

Seeking a female actor to play Laura, a young carer who arrives with warmth, competence, and an instinctive ability to manage André’s shifting moods. Though she appears steady and reassuring, her identity and intentions become increasingly ambiguous as André challenges her presence. The role calls for layered subtlety, calm under pressure, and the ability to shift between empathy, mystery, and quiet resilience as the boundaries between truth and perception blur.

Ambiguous figures who appear in André’s world as different people

Seeking actors of any age to portray shifting, ambiguous figures who appear in André’s world as different people—at times insisting they are Pierre, Anne, or others from his life. These roles embody the fractured, unstable way André now perceives those around him. Performers must convey calmness, unease, and subtle transformation, moving fluidly between identities as his reality blurs.
